Keywords and Googlebot

Each page of your web site must have its own set of keywords or key phrases that it targets and you should put this keyword or key phrases all over your page. This is to help Google determine the relevance of your web page. If you don't put keywords in your contents, Google will not be able to see how relevant your page is.

When Google's spiders (also known as Googlebot) first goes to your page, it does not know what your page is about. The spider analyzes your page and if it finds certain words that are for example repeated often, it will take that as the keyword of your page. For example if the spider comes across a lot of the word cooking spread all over your web page, it'll then think that your web page must be about cooking.

This of course is only one of the many criterias that the spider uses to determine what your page is about.

Beware that if you put too many keywords in your contents (known as keyword stuffing), the spider will consider it as spam.
