Directory submission and Google
Getting listed in the Directories will certainly improve your position in Google's search results. A human editor will review your web site after you have submitted it manually (you can't submit to directories automatically because they don't accept it).
Whether or not your site ends up being added to the directory's listing is entirely up to the editor so you have to make sure your web site is as complete as possible; meaning no "under construction" pages and all pages are error-free before submission.
Why submit to Directories?
Submitting your site to a directory is useful because since the list of web sites in the directory is manually added by humans, the relevancy of those sites are very high and Google knows this. Directories have very high PageRanks and if you manage to get listed in directories, those directories are linking back to your site (backward links) and this will improve your link popularity because links in directories are considered high quality links.
If a web site has a high PageRank and it has links pointing to your site, the PageRank of your site will improve as well and higher PageRank will cause your web pages to rank higher in Google's search results.
The 2 major directory that you can submit to is Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ. Make sure to submit your web site's url to the correct category or your submission will probably be deleted by the editors. There is no guarantee that your site will appear in the directory's listings after you have submitted.
If you web site is still isn't listed in Yahoo after a couple of weeks of submission, you should resubmit.
With DMOZ, if you site isn't listed after a few weeks of submission, don't resubmit, but instead submit your site to a different category.
Other Directories
There are thousands of other directories on the internet ranging from general topic to niche topic directories. Some directories will let you submit to it for free and some you will have to pay a small fee to be included.
To find other directories, just go to Google and type in "directory"+"your keyword". For example if your keyword is cooking, you would go to Google, type in "directory"+"cooking" and click Search.
Before submitting to a directory, check its robots.txt. This file will always be located at the root directory of a site. For example http://www.dmoz.org/robots.txt.
You need to look at robots.txt to see if they allows major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN to crawl it. If they don't allow crawlers to crawl them, it is pointless to submit to them.

Factors of site ranking in Google
Google will consider these factors when ranking your web pages:
off-the-page factors
on-the-page factors
Before you write the contents of your page, it helps to know in advanced the type of keywords that you want to target for that page. This is so you can use those keywords when writing the contents of your page. Content is always king and if you don't have good and relevant contents on your site, your website will be of little use to your visitors and because of this, you'll never be able to rank high on Google.
Another plus of having good and relevant contents is that in time you'll find that other people in your industry will start linking to your site and this will of course help to make your site rank better.
In summary you just have to focus on 3 things:
This above factors are the only way to organically achieve high positions in Google's search results. Although it takes some time to achieve but it is worth it in the long run.
off-the-page factors
- How many pages (on other people's website) in Google's index is linking to your site and the text that are used in those links (anchor text) to point to your site and also do the pages of those other sites found in Directories under related categories.
- The PageRank of those pages linking to you. If you want to have high PageRanks, the sites that link to you must also have high PageRanks, have great contents and are constantly updated.
on-the-page factors
- HTML heading - The H1 to H6 header tags located in the body of your HTML.
- Text in your outgoing links (links pointing to other people's web sites).
- Meta tags (META Title, META keywords and META Description) - You need to put your keywords in those tags. META tags helps to tell Google what your site is about. Make sure your META tag info is in your <>HEAD><>/HEAD> section of your HTML otherwise your META tags won't be found.
- Alt tags - Alt tags are descriptions for the images that you use on your site. Using Alt tags will allow Google to interpret your images and see how relevant they are to your contents. Best if your Alt tags have your keywords in it.
- Anchor text - They are links that people use to navigate around your site or to navigate out of your site. Never use "click here" or something like that because it does not add to the relevance of your page, instead use your keywords or key phrases in your anchor text.
- The name of your web page also plays an important role. Make sure your page name have the desired keywords in them or else they won't rank well.

Google SEO HOW-TOs
Submit your website to search engines
You just have to submit your web site to 3 major Search Engines: Google, Yahoo and Live Search. If your web site is successfully indexed by them, your site will also appear in many other search engines as well.
Please note that you only submit after you've done your optimization so that when the Search Engines look at it, it will be at its best.
Submit your website to Google
If Google has not yet indexed your site, you can manually submit them to Google at http://www.google.com/addurl/. This is to let Google know about the existence of your site so Google will include it in its index. Please note that if you have created and submitted a site map, there is no need to submit your site to Google anymore.
Sometimes, even after you have submitted your site, you may find that Google did not index them. This is because you don't have external links pointing to your pages. Eventually Google will index them, it will just take longer. If you have a lot of links from other web sites that have been indexed by Google and those sites have links that points to your site, Google's spider (they are also called Googlebots) will follow those links to your site and index your site, so you don't even have to submit them to Google manually.
Be sure to submit only once.
Submit your website to Yahoo
Submitting your site to yahoo is easy. Just point your browser to http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html and submit your site. You'll need to register first though.
You can just submit your main url (you home page) and yahoo's spider will find and index your other pages. Sometimes if you find that it didn't index some of your pages, you can submit those to yahoo manually.
Once you get listed in Yahoo, you'll also be listed in Inktomi, AltaVista and AllTheWeb.
Submit your website to Live Search
To submit your site Live Search, just go to http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx
Please note that you only submit after you've done your optimization so that when the Search Engines look at it, it will be at its best.

Optimizing your HTML elements
When doing search engine optimization, you'll need to optimize these individual HTML elements of your page. You can easily view your own web site's or other people's HTML code by right-clicking on the page and choose View Page Source.
Each of your web page should be optimized for their targeted keywords or key phrases. The element that you need to optimize are:
1) Title Tag (sometimes called META Title)
Your Title tag should be descriptive, short and contain your keywords. This title will be displayed at the top of your visitors browser and also in Google search engine's natural listing (search results page). Google will consider your title when its determining your page relevancy. Put your keywords at the start of this tag and try to make it interesting too so that surfers are more likely to click on it.
2) META Description
Your META description is the description of your web page and will be displayed in Google's search results. Please note that Google does not use this description, instead Google will form its own description based on the contents of the page. Usually Google will display a small snippet of your content that is most relevant to what is queried.
This is not to say that you don't have to put in your META description at all because even though Google will not display it, it will still access it to determine the relevancy of your page. Other search engines will still display your META Description tag on their search results, so you can still use them like a pitch to get people to click to your website so you have to make it as descriptive and as interesting as possible.
3) META Keyword
Here you put in your keywords or key phrases that are most relevant to the content of your page. Because META Keyword has been abused in the past, Google places less weight on it. But do use them because other search engines will still use them.
Make sure that whatever keyword you use on your META Keyword, you also put those keywords in your Contents (the text in your HTML body) so that Google will see the relevance of your page.
4) Header tags
The header tags in your web page also plays an important role when doing search engine optimization. Your header tags ranges from H1 which is the biggest to H6 which is the smallest. Since H1 is the biggest, Google considers it to be the most important and have the most weight while H6 is the smallest and is considerd the least important by Google.
Don't use too many H1 tags though because it will lessen its effectiveness and remember to include your keywords in your header tags to help increase the relevance of your page.
